Simulation tools for cognitive radio

Major CR concepts have been tackled through various literature surveys and the development of reliable analytical models. However, numerical simulations must be performed to corroborate the theoretical results for fair and accurate findings.

Practical simulations have been performed using many computer aided simulation tools. In particular, the software packages MatlabSimulank and C/C++ languages have been of great help to the research community.

To tackle the cognitive radio concept from a physical layer point of view, GNU Radio is powerful free and open source software devoted to software defined radios. It can be paired with a Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) which is a hardware designed to work for wireless RF systems. The latter can be also programmed using LabVIEW toolkit to prototype advanced system configurations including singlaechannel, MIMO and embedded systems.

NetSim [1] is also one of the best tools which has been used to assess the performance of the cognitive radio standard IEEE 802.22. It possess a sophisticated and easy-to-use user interface and has source C files easy to be modified for different debug purposes. From documentation perspective, community and on-line support is clear and easy to find.

SEAMCAT [2] is a free of charge software tool. It evaluates various potential interference use cases between different radio communication technologies using Monte Carlo-based realizations. SEAMCAT allows studying mainly the spectrum sensing feature among the same or the adjacent frequency channels; in such case, the interfering users try to detect the presence of protected services according to a prefixed detection threshold. It has been used to investigate the interference between secondary systems operating in TVWS and incumbent receivers namely, DVB-T and PMSE for the COGEU project in Europe [3] and provided insightful conclusions.

Very recently, CorteXlab [4] is an experimental laboratory hosted at INSA-Lyon in France developed with the objective of providing remote access to a research platform with full experimental possibilities and large scale cognitive radio testbeds.
