On January 23, 2013, the National
Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Hitachi Kokusai
Electric Inc. and ISB Corporation have introduced the World’s First
TV White Space prototype implementing the IEEE 802.22 standard for WRAN systems [1]. The trial product contains the prototype devices of base station (BS) and customer premise equipment (CPE) with respect to the IEEE 802.22 standard. The newly developed prototype operates over the portion of spectrum ranging from 470 MHz to 710 MHz.

Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. was
the party responsible for developing the physical layer of the proposed
prototype. The National Institute of Information and Communications
Technology were in charge of implementing the cognitive MAC protocols such as
interference estimation, geo-location and access to TV white space database
over the IP interface. ISB Corporation was the approved database provider to
assist the prototype in monitoring and accessing the free TV bands.
Recently on January 23, 2014,
NICT and Hitachi Kokusai succeeded in the world’s first field trial where
long-range broadband communications over TVWS was confirmed by using IEEE
802.22-based and IEEE 802.11af-based systems [2].
You can also see the world’s
first portable Tablet terminal in TV white space [3].
